to build a library

15 August 2006; Total Delinquency.

Apologies all around. Help me alleviate my guilt. I haven't updated the news section in months, even though there has been plenty going on. For the past 6 months or so, I have been in full planning mode with Sasha Chavchavadze, the director of Proteus Gowanus. We are putting together a year long show about Libraries. Proteus Gowanus takes an interdisciplinary approach with its programming, so there will be many different artists, writers, historians, and others presenting work, scholarship, and creative projects that deal with libraries. We have lots of great people involved and we are both very much looking forward to the coming year. The first event will be on the 5th of September. Rick and Megan Shaw Prelinger of the Prelinger Library in San Francisco will be giving a presentation about starting their library. I will pass along more details when I know them. We also have a number of great artists contributing work to the show. So far we have works from Tracy Priest, David Gatten, Jeffrey Schiff, Christopher Warrington, and Nina Katchadourian. We will also have a small station set up by the Brooklyn Museum Library.

Oh yeah—I will also be moving the entire Reanimation Library into Proteus Gowanus! This promises to make the Library even more accessible over the coming year. Details are still being worked out, but I hope to have a scanner available for use in the Gallery so that anyone who finds exciting and tasty nuggets will be able to make a scan and take the image with them. I have been feverishly at work typing up call numbers and attaching them to the books. They look great. Really.

Plenty of other good things have happened over the past few months. Many great acquisitions and lots of good library visits. I promise to be more diligent about updating this News page in the coming months as the Library Show gets under way.
